OakBend Medical Center’s Williams Way Labor and Delivery Department has received re-designation as a Texas Ten Step Facility. The Department of State Health Services developed this program as a method to improve maternity care practices in birthing facilities.
Endorsed by the Texas Medical Association, the program is based on the World Health Organization/United Nation Children’s Fund’s Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, a bundle of evidenced-based practices which are proven to increase breastfeeding exclusivity and duration and reduce racial and ethnic disparities.
Completing each step requires hours of staff education with changes in clinical practice. The Ten Steps include: Breastfeeding Policy, Staff Training, Inform parents of the benefit of breastfeeding, Skin-to-Skin, Lactation Support, Give Babies Breastmilk, Rooming In, Feeding on Cue, No Artificial Nipples and Support and Resources. OakBend is focusing on its goal to make OakBend Medical Center “THE” place in Fort Bend County to have your baby!
