Local Doctor Serves as 'Family Physician of the Day' for 80th Texas Legislature

4/26/2007

AUSTIN - April, 26, 2007 - Joe Anzaldua, M.D., of Sugar Land Texas, volunteered to serve as the Family Physician of the Day for the Texas Legislature on April 26, 2007. Dr. Anzaldua is a member of the Texas Academy of Family Physicians, the state’s largest specialty organization, which coordinates and directs the program. He currently serves on the TAFP Board of Directors as Alternate Director for the Colorado Valley Chapter.
More than 2,500 family physicians have traveled to Austin during Legislative and Special sessions to serve as the Physician of the Day since the program’s inception in 1971.

Family physicians participating in the program volunteer time away from their practices to staff the Capitol Health Services Clinic. A TAFP member is scheduled to serve in the clinic each day of the 80th Legislature.

As the Family Physician of the Day, Dr. Anzaldua will be available to treat emergencies in the Capitol building or on the grounds. The primary concern, however, for the Physician of the Day is the care and well being of the Texas legislators and their staffs—temporary Austin residents who may not have a regular primary care physician in the capital city. Dr. Anzaldua will be introduced in the House and the Senate by his legislators, Rep. Charlie Howard and Sen. Glenn Hegar, and his name will be recorded as part of the official legislative record.

Dr. Anzaldua is a member of the OakBend Medical Group and has been in private medical practice in the Sugar Land area since 1985. He attended the University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio and completed his residency training in family and community medicine. Family physicians are qualified to work in all major medical areas and trained to treat more than 90 percent of all cases they encounter. Family physicians care for patients of all ages.

“We are extremely proud to have a physician of Dr. Anzaldua’s caliber in the OakBend Medical Group,” said David Rowe, CEO of Oakbend Medical Center. “We really value his leadership and his skills as a dedicated physician. I cannot think of anyone who is more qualified to take care of our Texas legislators, than Joe Anzaldua.”

He currently serves on the Governor’s EMS and Trauma Advisory Council Stroke Committee and was appointed to serve as the first Health Authority for the City of Sugar Land. A Sugar Land resident for the past 23 years, Dr. Anzaldua is married with three children and is a member of the Houston Symphony Chorus. He says he makes every attempt to stay involved in the community.

The Physician of the Day program is coordinated and organized by the Texas Academy of Family Physicians and co-sponsored by the Travis County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, Texas Osteopathic Medical Association, and Texas Department of State Health Services.

More than 5,500 family physicians, residents and students make up TAFP’s membership throughout 33 local chapters. The Academy works to preserve and promote quality, cost-effective health care and to ensure an optimum supply of well-trained family physicians.
